MAPS RSS Overview

The MAPS RSS (Relay Spam Stopper) is an extensive list of IP addresses of known insecure ("open relay") mail servers. A third-party relay, also known as an "open relay" or "insecure relay", is a mail server that will route mail for any third party to any other third party, no questions asked. Spammers often hunt for and abuse open relays in an effort to cover their tracks because they know their spam is unwelcome and unwanted.

IT professionals may choose to utilize the MAPS RSS Service to assist in identifying and blocking email from these open relays, thereby greatly reducing the amount of unwanted email. Reduced mail volume means savings in every element of your messaging cost structure; from intangible costs such as worker productivity and risk reduction, to direct costs such as bandwidth, storage, mail servers, spam filters and IT personnel.

The MAPS RSS is carefully maintained and only contains IP addresses that are known to have relayed spam via an open relay. All listings are investigated and confirmed to be an insecure server. MAPS maintains samples of spam that was sent via each open relay as well as the results of the testing performed after spam is received. When an IP address is added to this list, effort is made to contact the owner of the server and alert them that they have an open relay that is being abused, allowing them to correct the problem.
